Learn the News presents stories sensitively for young readers to avoid the horror often broadcast and printed in the mainstream media. However, important issues are covered using carefully thought-out angles to stories. Five fresh stories are loaded on the site every Wednesday under the headlines World News; Continent News (with Africa, Europe, the Americas, Australasia and Asia each having a turn, in rotation); Environment News; Business News and Sport News. Take a look at a sample of a typical Learn the News news story. Every Tuesday, a Today in History page is loaded, featuring six incidents that happened on the day and mention it being the birthday of somebody famous. Take a look at a sample of a Today in History page. You'll see that the news pages are presented to offer something for everyone at different levels of literacy. New stories are loaded on Mondays. One of them is accompanied by a cartoon of Sipho, the roving reporter, giving an idea of how journalists operate. Sipho is an enthusiastic young "hack", willing to drop everything at any moment to get out there and report a story, somewhere in the world. Sipho should kindle enthusiasm among young readers to take on careers, particularly in journalism and related fields. |
Sipho is a common name in South Africa, the country that hosted the 2010 World Cup, and where Learn the News is produced. (Sipho is pronounced "sea-pho" and means "gift" in the isiZulu language) Billboards can be downloaded to paste up around school campuses and other public places to inform readers about the latest stories on www.learnthenews.com Interactivity between readers and the newspaper is encouraged through frequent competitions. There is also a story for teachers' and parents' interest that is not processed for young readers' use, which can be accessed from the home page. While making optimum use of this media and education tool is encouraged, an easy way to use Learn the News is to simply paste the stories around a world map, with strings, or pieces of wool, connecting them to the countries they come from. The "quick quiz" questions can often be used in quiz competitions. Stories and worksheets are archived. Every year a CD will be made available for sale of the cartoons featuring Sipho and their associated stories and worksheets. Over the years, there has been convincing feedback that Learn the News fulfils it three main aims: to encourage reading, promote general knowledge and spark an interest in current affairs. |
